Under The Armour: Developing the Person Before the Athlete

Every athlete wears armour.
For a fencer, it's the mask, jacket and glove that people see. But underneath that equipment is something far more important – a young person with thoughts, emotions, ambitions, doubts and dreams.
At Paul Davis Fencing Academy, we believe that the greatest performances don't start with physical ability. They start with understanding yourself.
That is why we have launched Under The Armour – a brand-new pillar of our Ages + Stages syllabus, designed to help athletes understand what is happening beneath the surface.

More Than a Fencing Programme
For years our philosophy has been simple:
It's not just what you get. It's who you become.
Winning medals, earning selections and reaching international competitions are fantastic achievements, but they should never be the only measure of success.
The person an athlete becomes through the journey matters even more.
Resilience.
Courage.
Humility.
Discipline.
Leadership.
Self-awareness.
These qualities don't appear by accident. They must be developed intentionally.
Under The Armour gives us a framework to do exactly that.
Feel. Think. Act.
At the centre of the programme is a simple but powerful process:
Feel
Every emotion has a purpose.
Excitement before a competition.
Nerves before stepping onto the piste.
Disappointment after defeat.
Pride after success.
Frustration when progress feels slow.
Rather than ignoring these emotions or trying to hide them, we teach athletes to recognise them, name them and understand why they are there.
You cannot manage what you do not recognise.
Think
Once an athlete understands how they feel, the next question becomes:
"What am I telling myself?"
Our thoughts shape our decisions.
Negative thoughts create hesitation.
Constructive thoughts create opportunity.
Through age-appropriate conversations, reflection and coaching, athletes begin to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and replace them with stronger, more productive ones.
This is where genuine growth mindset begins, not through repeating positive phrases, but through learning how to think better under pressure.
Act
Feelings influence thoughts.
Thoughts influence actions.
Actions create habits.
Habits create identity.
Ultimately, Under The Armour is about helping athletes choose behaviours that move them towards the person they want to become, even when circumstances are difficult.
Champions aren't defined by how they act when everything is going well.
They are defined by how they respond when things become uncomfortable.
Growing With Every Stage
One of the most exciting parts of Under The Armour is that it grows alongside the athlete.
A six-year-old and a sixteen-year-old experience emotions very differently, so our coaching should reflect that.
Throughout the Ages + Stages syllabus, athletes revisit the same principles with increasing depth and maturity.
Our youngest athletes learn to recognise basic emotions and understand that every feeling is normal.
As they progress, they begin to develop confidence, communication, empathy and resilience.
Older athletes explore more complex topics such as pressure, identity, expectations, leadership, setbacks, confidence, motivation, self-discipline and performing under stress.
The conversations evolve because the athlete evolves.
Just as technical skills become more sophisticated over time, emotional skills should too.
Coaching the Whole Athlete
Traditional coaching often focuses on physical and technical performance.
Modern coaching recognises that performance starts much earlier.
An athlete who understands themselves learns faster.
They recover from setbacks quicker.
They communicate better.
They become more independent.
They make better decisions under pressure.
They become stronger teammates and stronger leaders.
That is why every coach at the Academy has a responsibility not only to teach fencing, but to help develop people.
Under The Armour provides a common language that allows coaches, athletes and families to support that journey together.
Building Stronger People

We often tell our athletes that setbacks are part of the process.
But simply saying "be resilient" isn't enough.
Resilience is a skill.
Confidence is a skill.
Leadership is a skill.
Emotional awareness is a skill.
Like footwork or bladework, these skills improve through deliberate practice.
By embedding these conversations into everyday coaching, we are helping athletes develop tools they will use long after their competitive careers have finished.
Whether they become international athletes, university students, business leaders, teachers or parents, these lessons remain valuable for life.
Under The Armour
Everyone sees the armour.
Few people see what lies underneath.
Our role as coaches is to understand both.
Because beneath every mask is a person learning how to navigate challenges, overcome setbacks and discover what they are capable of becoming.
That is the purpose of Under The Armour.
Not simply to create better fencers.
But to help build happier, stronger, more resilient people.
Because at Paul Davis Fencing Academy, our philosophy has never been about creating champions alone.
It has always been about helping every athlete discover who they are......and choose who they become.
