The People Behind the Academy: Celebrating Our Volunteers

When people think about the Academy, they often see the athletes competing on the piste, the coaches delivering sessions, or the medals and achievements that follow. What is less visible, but equally important, is the incredible network of volunteers who help make everything possible.

Behind every successful session, competition, event, and project is a community of people generously giving their time, skills, and energy to help others succeed.

More Than Just Coaching

Volunteering at the Academy takes many different forms.

Some volunteers support our coaching team, helping younger athletes learn new skills, build confidence, and enjoy their journey in sport. Others can be found setting up competitions, laying out pistes, managing equipment, or helping events run smoothly from start to finish.

Many of our volunteers support the day-to-day operation of the Hertfordshire Combat Centre itself. They help with centre maintenance, building improvements, cleaning, decorating, and ensuring the venue remains a welcoming place for everyone who walks through the doors.

Others contribute through our café, serving coffee, selling cakes, welcoming visitors, and creating the friendly atmosphere that makes the centre feel like a second home to so many families.

Some volunteers bring professional expertise that would otherwise be out of reach for many grassroots organisations. We are fortunate to receive support from people who offer advice and guidance in areas such as human resources, business development, marketing, website design, building projects, finance, health and safety, and strategic planning.

Every contribution matters.

Whether someone gives two hours a month or several days a week, their efforts help create opportunities for hundreds of people across our community.

Building Something Bigger Than Sport

The Academy and Hertfordshire Combat Centre were never intended to be just places to learn fencing.

They were built to be places where people can belong.

Places where children gain confidence, adults find new friendships, families feel connected, and individuals from all backgrounds can challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

Volunteering plays a huge role in creating that culture.

Many volunteers tell us they enjoy being part of something bigger than themselves. They enjoy seeing young people develop, watching athletes achieve goals, and helping create opportunities that may not otherwise exist.

In return, volunteering often provides opportunities for personal growth, learning new skills, building confidence, gaining experience, and becoming part of a community that genuinely values contribution and effort.

At the Academy, we believe that everyone has something to offer.

Creating Opportunities Through Experience

One of the most rewarding ways we support young people is through work experience placements.

Each year we welcome students who want to learn more about coaching, business, sport, leadership, and community development. These placements provide a genuine insight into the reality of working within a sports organisation, far beyond what can be learned from a classroom or job description.

Students have the opportunity to shadow staff, work alongside coaches, contribute to real projects, and develop practical skills that will support them in future careers.

Importantly, these placements are made possible because our staff and volunteers are willing to invest their time in mentoring the next generation.

Karolina's Journey

One recent example is Karolina, who completed a week of work experience with the Academy after previously spending a day shadowing Academy Director Paul Davis.

Reflecting on her experience, Karolina explained that the placement gave her a much deeper understanding of the profession and the realities of working within sport.

During the week she developed her communication skills by contacting schools to discuss fencing opportunities and helping build relationships with potential new partners. Despite initially feeling nervous, she quickly grew in confidence and gained valuable experience speaking professionally with schools and organisations.

She also spent time coaching children across different schools, learning how to adapt her communication style for different age groups and how to explain concepts clearly and effectively.

Alongside coaching, Karolina explored areas she had not previously considered, including marketing, business operations, camp promotion, and financial planning. She worked on projects involving school outreach, summer camp promotion, and understanding the commercial aspects that help sustain and grow a successful sports organisation.

One of her key projects involved researching and identifying schools that could benefit from joining the Academy network, contacting those schools by phone and email, and beginning conversations with potential partners. At the end of the week, she presented her findings, outlining the financial considerations, logistics, opportunities, and key contacts associated with each school.

Most importantly, Karolina demonstrated professionalism, enthusiasm, and a willingness to embrace new challenges throughout the week.

She reflected that the experience helped her become more independent, strengthened her problem-solving abilities, improved her time management, and provided a far greater understanding of the many roles involved in running a successful sports organisation.

We are incredibly proud of the way she approached the placement and grateful for the positive contribution she made during her time with us.

Thank You

To every volunteer, mentor, supporter, parent, advisor, coach, and community member who contributes to the Academy and Hertfordshire Combat Centre — thank you.

The opportunities we create, the experiences we provide, and the successes we celebrate are only possible because of people willing to give their time for the benefit of others.

You are helping to build more than athletes.

You are helping to build confidence, friendships, opportunities, and futures.

And for that, we are incredibly grateful.
